Land Economics Gathering in Montreal
September 14, 2025
LAI International just held its annual Land Economics Gathering in Montreal, Canada, from September 11-13, 2025. Representing the New York chapter were chapter President Jason Barr and LAI member Michael Lappin. It was an amazing three days of events focused on Montreal’s real estate, land use, and history.
Day 1 included a panel session on housing affordability and informative ideas to solve the housing crisis in the U.S. and Canada. Following that, participants were treated to a guided walking tour of Old Montreal.
Day 2 began with a talk on the present and future of AI for business applications. In the afternoon, participants were honored to receive a tour and a presentation about a new high-end mall, Royalmount, in central Montreal, which is part of a massive redevelopment project that will also include offices and residences. Following that, participants were treated to a talk by Louis Lemay of Lemay Architecture and Design. Mr. Lemay highlighted the variety of important projects that his firm is working on, including the new University of Montreal campus.
On Day 3, participants enjoyed a panel session about Montreal’s bustling port and transportation infrastructure. Lastly, attendees heard a fascinating talk by Christopher Sweetnam Holmes, Senior Director, Real Estate at Canada Lands Company. Participants were able to get an insider’s perspective on Canada Lands’ many large-scale redevelopment projects in Montreal.
Congratulations to Vancouver chapter member Richard Cook for winning the LAI Member of the Year Award and to Angela D. Brooks, FAICP, Chief Housing and Urban Development Officer for the City of Philadelphia, for winning the International Public Official/Urban Affairs Award of the Year Award!
